President’s Day Writing Fun With Leprechauns!

Lately I’ve been enjoying creating writing prompts using real pictures on my camera as well as AI generated pictures. Enjoy reading the short story and using the prompts to discuss creative writing, President’s Day, leprechauns, and whatever else it leads to. Hope you enjoy!

Larry Leprechaun had always been a curious and adventurous little creature. He had been living in the lush green forests of Mt. Rushmore for as long as he could remember. The peaceful mountains and the majestic presidents carved into the rocks always fascinated him. He just wished he knew who the huge heads were and why so many people came to see them.

One day, a group of tourists spotted him climbing on one of the presidents. They were holding up small rectangles and pointing them at him. Larry had never been seen by humans before. How do you think he felt?  Now imagine that you are one of the visitors to Mt. Rushmore and you see Larry. What would you do? Would you talk to him? Imagine that he asks you why people come to see this mountain and these heads that were carved into it. What would you tell him?

Other discussion questions and prompts

  • Who are the presidents carved into the mountain?
  • Is Mt. Rushmore real?
  • Is this a true story?
  • What are the small rectangles the tourists are holding?
  • What would you say to Larry about the mountain?
  • Can you think of a better main title for this story?
  • Write your own story about a leprechaun.
  • Draw a picture of what you think a leprechaun would look like.

Please leave a comment and let me know if your students/class enjoyed this. I’d love to hear what they came up with!
